A very wise man, then an undergraduate at the University of Peradeniya, once said that there are no wrongdoers in this world everyone justifies their actions/decisions. The act or decision may be illegal or unethical respectively, but in the mind of the doer it is justified, it is right, it is even ethical, whether or not the world understands or sanctions.
No, I didn’t count the number of hypocrites in Sri Lanka. Neither is it a calculated guess or a ballpark figure. It simply means ‘large’ and is used simply because ‘Island of a large number of hypocrites’ is probably less eye-catching. An example of hypocrisy, then? Well, call it sleight of hand, but add ‘more or less harmless.’

719 household packs were distributed by the government to families in home isolation and lockdown areas in Lami, Suva, Nasinu, Nausori, Lautoka and Ba yesterday.
326 packs were delivered to families in home isolation in areas of Lami, Suva, Nasinu and Nausori, 42 packs in Lautoka areas, 1 pack in the Ba area and 350 packs to families in the Qauia lockdown area.
The government says so far, they have delivered around 4,414 packs to families in home isolation in the Lami, Suva, Nasinu and Nausori areas, 438 packs in the Lautoka areas and a total of 48 packs in the Ba areas.
Health Secretary Dr James Fong said all six patients were unvaccinated.
“A 58-year old man from Tacirua presented to a medical facility on Wednesday with severe covid symptoms including shortness of breath. His condition worsened at the health centre and he died on the same day.
“An 82-year-old man from Waila presented to a health facility in severe respiratory distress. He was retrieved by a medical team to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.”
Dr Fong said the man’s condition worsened at the CWM Hospital and he died two days after admission on July 12.
Unwell with symptoms
His family reported that he had been unwell with symptoms that included fever, and cough, Dr Fong said.
The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, is expected to move for the adoption of the Mid-Year Review Budget Statement and Economic Policy of Government next week. The Mid-Year Budget, which is the Government’s supplementary estimate for the 2021 financial year, would be proposed to the House on Thursday, July 22, at the Parliament House, Accra. Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader, announced this on the floor of the House in Accra, on Friday, when he presented the Business Statement for the Ninth Week Ending Friday, July 23, 2021, of the current meeting of the Legislature. He said Tuesday, July 20, is a public holiday in respect of the Eid ul-Adha, and would be observed as such.
